"Out of the Past" by Benny Golson, from the album Saxes in Stereo (Riverside RLP 1124). Original 1959 pressing. This album happens to feature the only two remaining musicians alive today who were in Art Kane's famous 1958 photo, "A Great Day In Harlem" (see link in my bio for a great documentary). One of my favorite photoshoots with The Doors was taken by Art Kane in April, 1968 at the Chateau Marmont for the June 28th, 1968 issue of Life Magazine. Three images from this shoot had been featured in Life's photo essay called "The New Rock." The first photograph is by far my favorite ever taken of the band, and in my top 10 of favorite photographs of all time. Back in the 1960s they didn't have any editing software like we have today. So to add more meaning or "enhance the story behind an image," Art Kane created a technique where he'd layer, or "sandwich," two 35mm transparencies together to create this kind of effect. The image he chose to layer over The Doors was a photo he took of the sun setting over the Pacific ocean. A few months later The Doors released "Waiting for the Sun," it is unclear if there is any correlation between the album title and the image. #thedoors #artkane

Cool event at the @dusablemuseum this evening. A discussion on the famous photograph “A Great Day in Harlem” by Art Kane which was shot in 1958 for Esquire magazine. The photo shows 57 jazz greats assembled before a brownstone in Harlem. The discussion was lead by photographer’s son Jonathan Kane and jazz legend Benny Golson (who was in the picture). The talk was preceded by a performance by the Vincent Goines quartet. They performed Benny Golson tunes and Mr. Golson spoke about how he came to write them. It was a real treat. 今夜は、先月９月15日以来となる、ジャズ・ライヴへ。その日は六本木『サテンドール』における西村知恵さん(vo)の昼夜公演だったのだが、マチネの開演前に私の席に現れて、「いつもお世話になっているささやかなお礼に」と未開封ＣＤを手渡された。「１曲＋α」参加しているとのこと。彼女のSNSでも話題にした記憶が淡いので、軽い気持ちで頂戴してしまった。 封を切らないままの状態だったが、今夜久々に聴きに行くライヴが西村知恵さん(才気ある若手ギタリストとの極上デュオ)ということもあり、午前中に洗濯物を干してから、初めて聴いた。 軽い気持ちで受け取ったのを後悔した。これは、実に素晴らしいコンセプト・アルバムだ。 『EDDIE SOUND』(2019年８月発売)。 ☆ ☆ 「#EddieSound （#エディーサウンド )」とは、「#江戸川サウンド 」(詳細は、このアルバムのスペシャル・アドヴァイザーである#大伴良則 氏によるライナーノーツを一部切り取ったので参照されたい）。利根川の分流で、三都県の境を流れて東京湾に注がれる、#江戸川 。江戸川と荒川に挟まれて東京湾に面する東京23区のひとつ、#江戸川区 。二者を意識したサウンドとのこと。 このところ、「東京」という響きに風情を見出だせなくなりつつある身。「江戸」の街作りに愛着を感じている。川が都内のあちこちにあった時代の方が文化も知恵も豊かだったと私は思う。川を埋め立てることでメガシティの道を辿ることになった#TOKYO の街だが、駅前の再開発が何処もかしこも似たり寄ったりの風景になる味気なさに象徴されるように、主張を上乗せする程に貧しくなっていく気がしてならない。 「江戸川プロジェクト」(地域活性)の一環でもあるとのことだが、外出したら音楽を持ち歩かないことにしている私でも、浅草に向かう隅田川上の水上バスで風にあたりながら聴いてみたいと思ったし、多摩川縁での花見の時に流すのも好いなぁ、なんて思った。江戸そのものへの愛着をも感じる。 演歌とラテンが融合するオープニング曲“江戸川令和音頭”に象徴されるように、ジャンル分け出来ない魅力が詰まっている。サウンドが好いし、参加しているヴォーカルが何れも好い。質量を携えて遊んでいるのだ。安っぽさがない。制作者の思いを感じる。“Take The ''A” Train”を彷彿とさせるインスト・ナンバー“Edogawa Train”に続くのが#西村知恵 の歌う３曲目“#RiversideSerenade ”。グレン・ミラーのあの名曲を全編スキャットで緩やかに歌っている。ロバート・ジョンソンの名曲を６曲目“Sweet Home Edogawa”としてアーシーなブルーズで歌う藤井康一のフィーリング。オープニングで演歌と絡んだ魚住弘樹の“Maiya Con Dios”がフルでお祭りヴァージョンで歌われるのだが、歌詞が（この時代に語られなくなりつつある)「哀」をしっかりと孕んでいるのもイイなぁ。 以上７曲に加えられたボーナス・トラック“a Foolish Riverside ～#川面を眺め過ぎて ”がまた素晴らしい。計50分53秒のアルバムなのだが、このトラック８だけで何と21分超もあるのだ。大伴良則氏の手掛けたスクリプトによる、朗読トラック。川のせせらぎの音が効果音として流れる中、このアルバムのプロデューサーであるK.INOJO氏(作詞家・ベーシスト)がナレーションを務め、ジャズ・ヴォーカリスト西村知恵さんがところどころ参加して台詞を吐いているのである。物語そのものが魅力的だが、K.INOJO氏の朗読力が特筆もの。私も（声の良さが買われて）ラジオのナレーションの仕事をしたことがあるが、やはり、声は表現者には武器となるなぁと改めて感じる。以前持っていた朗読ＣＤ『星の王子さま』の森本レオさん(僕=パイロット)の声とテクニックを彷彿とさせるものがある。 繰り返し聴いてしまった。音楽だけ聴きたければ７曲目で止めても好いが、ボーナス・トラックも続けて聴きたくなる。東京での生活にこの川のせせらぎを取り入れてみたい。 YouTubeで「Eddie Sound」を検索すると、公式チャンネルで11分超の全曲ダイジェストが聴けます（朗読トラックを含む）。今度は購入して、誰かにプレゼントしても好いなぁ。 Produced by #KINOJO Sound produced by #TunekazuAoki #ChieNishimura (vo) #afoolishriverside #YoshinoriOtomo (script) K.INOJO with Chie(reading) Chie Nishimura's albums #myideal #inmylife #alfie #enrecords #ArtKane #agreatdayinharlem #SeizoWatase #わたせせいぞう

10月に入って９日目、大仕事を終えてから10日経過。いつものようにジャズ・ライヴを楽しんだり、一人で過ごせる美味しい食事処やオーセンティックなＢＡＲのカウンターで柔らかく微笑みながら、穏やかに過ごすなんて日々ではなかった。精神的にかなりしんどかった。長年の友の死、身内のちょっとしたこと、そして、自分自身の健康状態。親しい人を見送る機会は多くなるし、自分自身の今後ももっともっと考えなくてはならない。様々を突きつけられ、己れ一人で判断しなくてはならなかったこの数日だった。 オン＆オフの様々が展開していた2019年10月９日(水)。18時頃に帰宅。魚屋で捌いてもらった二尾のお造りと鉄火巻を肴に、ビールを１缶。何も考えずにすぐにでも横になりたいところだったが、様々を洗い流したくて、入浴。湯船の中であれやこれや考えていたら１時間近くもバスルームにいた。鼻唄は無し。何か呻いていた気もする。風呂から上がると、このところの私のことを気にかけてくれていた女友達から着信があったことに気づく。バスタオルを首に、彼女に電話をかけると、第一声が「大丈夫？」。泣きそうになった。 私にしては（珍しく）いつまでもタラタラと長電話したいところだったけれども、10分余で先方から切られた。私が、柄にもなく、艶っぽい発言をしてしまったから。「子持ち女を口説くクソ度胸が貴方にあって？」と釘をさされてから、優しく「貴方らしくもない」と続き、更に優しく「貴方とはそんな風になりたくないの」と言われた。「お互いに、わかっていることよね？」 ☆ ☆ 彼女が結婚しないままに男の子を出産したのは10年程前だ。父親のことは判らない。私がコトの真相を知ったなら、暴力を否定して生きてきた男でもどんな行動に出るか判らないと察したのだろう。詳しいことはいまだに聞かされない。 彼女と知り合ったのは、更に遡る。私が最後の交際相手女性と付き合い始めたのは遥か昔になるが、その少し前に私に対する愛を今も友達のその女性から告白された。心と肉体で訴えかけてきた、切ない程の告白だった。「気に留めている女性がいるんだ」と私が拒んだ時、場末の女のような安っぽい言葉を私に浴びせたりはしなかった。だから、今日まで友情関係は続いている。逢って酒を飲むでもない、SNSでやり取りする訳でもない、電話とメールと手紙のやり取りでこの10年余を経てきたその関係性に改めて感謝したい思いだった。そして、この数日間の心の混乱が幾分救われたような気がした。「一生付き合っていたいから」と言って電話を切った今日の彼女の心映えが深く沁み入った。私からは「ありがとう」だったと思う。 この頃の精神状態ではどんな飲み方をするか判らないと、自重気味だったアルコールと共に過ごす夜に（ただし、ワインだけ。スピリッツは抜き）。 選んだＢＧＭは、我が人生最高の時から一転して苦悩に満ちたあの90年代から漸く脱却した頃に出遭った２組の２枚組コンピレーションＣＤ、『THE VERY BEST OF JAZZ AFTER DARK』(1998)と『THE VERY BEST OF JAZZ AFTER DARK 2』(2000)。私がこれまで出遭ったジャズのコンピレーションＣＤの中でも最強のシリーズ。順に、エラ・フィッツジェラルドの“Every Time We Say Goodbye”から始まりニーナ・シモンの“I Loves You Porgy”で終わる１枚目(69分39秒)、 グローヴァー・ワシントンJr.の“Mercy Mercy Me”で始まりエラの“Someone To Watch Over Me”で終わる２枚目(65分47秒)、エラの“Stardust”から始まりビリー・ホリデイの“God bless The Child”で終わる３枚目(78分59秒)、ジョージ・ベンソンの“California Dreamin'”から始まり（知る人ぞ知る）ブルックリン・ファンク(エッセンシャルズ)の“Take The L Train To Brooklyn”で終わる４枚目(79分11秒)。ヴォーカルとインスト、日本のありきたりなコンピレーション盤とは一線を画していて大好きな２組（４枚、計293分36秒を通しで聴くのは初めてのことかも）。 ２枚目を終えた時点で（何れも飲みかけの）赤２本を空け、スタート時に冷蔵庫に冷やし始めた白を抜栓。今夜の戯れは長くなりそうだ（この２組４枚、本当にイイのだ）。 ☆ ☆ 明晩は久々(先月15日以来)のジャズ・ライヴ。声には出さないが、ひっそりと泣くかと。 #theverybestofjazzafterdark #jazzafterdark #variousartists #compilationcd #compilationalbum #オムニバス盤 #最強のジャズコンピレーション #perfectguidetotheMOON #月の本 #林完次 #DominiodeHeredia #BodegasAltanza #NorthernRegion #Rioja #spanishwine #tempranillo #ドミニオデエレディア #リオハ #ArtKane #agreatdayinharlem

《SEPTEMBER SONG》 ☆ ★ When I was a young man Courting the girls I played me a waiting game If a maid refused me With tossing curls I wooed her and wooed her With golden pearls And as time went by She come my way And as time went by she come ★ 2019年９月も今日30日で終わり。明日10月１日からの（極めて不条理な）消費増税を意識する反面、好きな月である９月が終わることにずっと思い傾けていた。 ☆ ☆ “September Song”というスタンダード・ナンバーがある。“Speak Low”と並んで、好きなクルト・ワイル作品。1938年のミュージカル『KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY』で忘れ難き名優ウォルター・ヒューストンが歌い、46年にビング・クロスビーが吹き込んでヒット。50年のハリウッド映画『旅愁』(原題；SEPTEMBER AFFAIR)では、飛行機で知り合った男女(ジョゼフ・コットン＆ジョーン・フォンテーン)が旅先のナポリでヒューストンの歌声(レコード)にじっくり聴き入るという名場面がある（この時にリヴァイヴァル・ヒット）。マックスウェル・アンダーソンの味わい深い詞も相俟って、ヴォーカリストに好まれている曲だ。サラ・ヴォーンのクリフォード・ブラウン(tp)との共演盤(1954)をはじめとする名唱がジャズ界には記録されているが、個人的には、ワイル唄いの第一人者ウテ・レンパーの表現が好きだ。 “September Song”とは、９月の素晴らしさを詩ったものではない。１年(12ヶ月)を人生に準えた時、９月は既に人生の折り返しを過ぎ、後半。華やかな真夏(過去)を振り返り、残された時間を思い始める季節。ふと我にかえり、「哀」を実感する頃。名曲だ。 私の好きな男性ジャズ・ヴォーカリスト、ジョニー・ハートマンに『SONGS FROM THE HEART』(1955)というアルバムがある。愛聴盤だ。ハートマンに関しては、「IMPULSE!」におけるジョン・コルトレーン(ts)とのあの共演盤(1963)が圧倒的に知られている。10代の頃から聴いてきた。恋愛が生活の中に伴っていた間はずっと特別なアルバムだった。が、中年を意識し出してからはこの「BETHLEHEM」盤に思いがどんどんと傾くようになった。私が好きなスタンダード・ナンバーが複数収録されているのだ。歌伴の名手ラルフ・シャロン(p)のトリオに加わるハワード・マギーのトランペットの音の質感がまたイイ。 はっきり言ってしまえば、ハートマンの声は反則である。イイ女と二人っきりの時、彼の声が流れてきたら、もうイケナイ。また同時に、艶っぽさだけでなく、父性も強く感じる歌声だ。粋でもある。それらは多分に、今日の日本の男達が逸してしまったものかもしれない。 ☆ ★ These precious days I'll spend with you These golden days I'll spend with you ★ ☆ “September Song”もまた、ハートマンの『SONGS FROM THE HEART』には収録されている。恋愛(の感情)が遠くなる程に、齢を重ねる程に、この曲のハートマンの歌声が心に沁みてくる。“I'll spend with you”と言える人の不在だけでなく、私は果たしてこの世界で父性を携えて齢を重ねてきたか、という問いがいつも頭をもたげる。 次の世代を意識して、この「September」を呼吸していただろうか。もしかして、この時代の不条理のあらゆることを投げっ放しにして、この後に待ち受ける「October」以降もやり過ごそうとしていないだろうか。 私の子供時代には「消費税」なんてシロモノはなかった。駄菓子屋で「10円」と表記されているものがそのまま買えた。100円持っていれば、10円のものが10個買えたり楽しめたり。が、今は就労年齢ではない子供達の日々のちょっとした買い物にも税金がかかるのだ。それが30年も続いている。その年月を過ごしてきた下の世代の「足し」になるような選択を、幸福な子供時代を過ごしてきた私の世代が果たしてしてきただろうか。努めてきただろうか。 増税の前夜、その問いをし続けている。父性の支えのない世の中には果たして救いはあるのだろうかと。 #septembersong #KurtWeill #MaxwellAnderson #JohnnyHartman #songsfromtheHeart #bethlehem #RalfSharon #JayCave #ChristyFebbo #HowardMcGhee #ジョニーハートマン #ソングスフロムザハート #vodka with #Kabosu (type of citrus fruit) #ontherocks #baccarat #かぼす #バカラのグラス #ArtKane #agreatdayinharlem

明日30日締切の原稿を書き終える。提出(送信)までにまだ手直しが必要だが、この段階まで行き着くとホッとする。油断は禁物と、疲労困憊の心身に言い聞かせつつ。体調がパッとしない中、我ながら健闘したと思う。 大作原稿を書き終えて、人様の手に委ねた後の月末は、20代半ばから毎月、髪と顔の手入れをしてもらっているサロンに足を運ぶ。長年の友人でもある店主夫婦に労いの言葉をかけてもらってからのその２時間余は、家族のいない身には救いと解放となるひととき。「囚われの身」から脱したと実感する。 10月の第１週は（一夜を除いて）通院と取材(with原稿執筆)の日々。週末、明日30日の予約を入れようとしたら、既に予約でいっぱいとのこと。消費増税の影響だろうか。この土日で予約出来る時間帯を尋ねたら今日の夕方となった。 原稿の最終チェックは、頭と顔をすっきりとさせてから(帰宅後)にすることにした。 リチャード・バックの『ILLUSIONS』と共に散策途中の中古店で購入した#SADE の２枚組ＣＤを漸く聴いている。『SADE：THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION』(2011)。４作目のアルバム『Love Deluxe』(1992)までのピックアップ『The Best of Sade』(1994)以来のオフィシャルなベスト盤である。オリジナル・アルバム未収録の新録音源も数曲含まれているので、デビュー以来の長年のファンとしては嬉しい（リリース時、あの年の５月や６月は、岩手の海岸沿いの町に暮らす母が被災してそれどころではなかった）。新品と見紛う状態の日本盤を手頃な価格で入手出来た。 #SadeAdu とは同い年である（彼女が４ヶ月早い）。『DIAMOND LIFE』(1984)の頃はプロデュース公演出演の話やCM仕事が幾つか入っていた時期で、２作目『PROMISE』(1985)の頃は２年がかりで勝ち取ることになるミュージカル主演のオーディション只中の日々。その後の（どんどんと間隔を置いていく）オリジナル・アルバムの各リリース時にも（極私的な)「時代」の記憶がある。「励み」と表現して好いのかは判らないが、彼等のサウンドとSade Aduの歌声と醸し出す雰囲気は今日まで心の支えであり続けている。「next album」も気長に待つしか術はないが、この時代にどんなメッセージが折り込まれているか本当に待ち遠しい。 やはり、同じ中古店で見つけたのが、お馴染みの#岩波書店 版の『#星の王子さま 』。紙ケース入りのハードカヴァーは自宅に既に２冊あるのだが、2000年11月新版第１刷＆2011年８月第11刷発行のこの「愛蔵版」は、本文の一部及び挿絵が1943年発行の米国版初版本に基づいたものに改められていて、巻末には素描(デッサン)６葉も特典として加えられている。とても好い状態で、300円で入手。 岩波のハードカヴァー日本語(#内藤濯訳 )版を意味もなくマニアックに３冊も所有している訳ではない。「３・11」の震災(津波)で図書室を失った学校は多い。2012年３月に３週間かけて東北の被災３県を廻って以来、サン=テグジュペリの『星の王子さま』とバージニア・リー・バートンの『ちいさいおうち』(こちらも岩波書店)の２作に関しては、自由が丘のいつもの老舗古書店で入手しては、私用に所有しているものと比べて状態がより好いものを旅行鞄に入れて、被災地の学校に寄贈してきた。 ２冊所有していたのは、もう随分被災地に足を運んでないから。何処がとはこの場では語るのを控えるが、線量高めの地域へ行くと私の両眼は（2011年夏に大病を患った時と同様の症状である）異様な赤みを帯びてくる。帰京しても暫くはその状態が続き、熱っぽくもなる。構わずに被災地入りを繰り返していたら、さすがに主治医から厳しく忠告された。免疫力が低下している中では愚行でしかない、と。だから、編集者やカメラマンとで５人で組んでいたチームも今は私を除く４人でとなってしまった。 先日、数年前の９月(秋分の日絡み)の連休中の５人の取材旅行時に綴った手記を読み返した。泣き笑いした数日の感慨が甦った。この「愛蔵版」は自分の為に残し、他の２冊は仲間達に託そうと思う。 サン=テグジュペリの『星の王子さま』とバートンの『ちいさいおうち』を寄贈した図書館(学校)から礼のお手紙をいただいた。どれ程励みになったかが綴られていた。その学校を改めて訪ねた時、新設された図書室でその２冊を手にした。私が手渡した時よりも子供達の手垢に塗れていて、何だか嬉しくて、思わず涙ぐんでしまった。 被災者の励みとなったのは私の行為なのではない。作品そのものの価値である。芸術や文学に自由に触れられる環境を決して逸してはならない。 #SADEtheultimatecollection #ultimatecollection #シャーデー #アルティメイトコレクション #AntoinedeSaintExupéry #SaintExupéry #SaintExupery #lepetitprince #thelittleprince #サンテグジュペリ #愛蔵版星の王子さま #星の王子さま愛蔵版 #ArtKane #agreatdayinharlem
