Well, at 5 am my daughter & I are in the garden looking for these guys for her school group project: to build a sustainable biosphere inside a plastic 2 liter bottle that has an aquatic element + a soil element to it. This round ball is actually an Armadilloum Vulgare - or pill bug & sometimes called a rolypoly. They are nocturnal creatures thus explaining why we’re up extra early and in the garden. (I let our dogs out around 5:30 am or close to sunrise. ) Anyway, the ones we found aren’t as pretty as this one - in fact they can be kinda grayish. They’re up at this hour eating decay under pieces of wood and rocks so retrieving them can get a little disgusting. We also located a snail for the project. I’m thinking - how clever are they?! If the biosphere plants don’t survive, they’ll decay & provide food for these guys. I do wonder what the plan is to keep the soil and water from mixing; I’m hoping to get a photo by Friday to post. Stay tuned for the biosphere’s progress.
