When we were in Onishi we had the opportunity to visit a Zen Buddhist shrine and practice a moon meditation which involved staring at a simple moon nihonga for 20 mins. After we harvested baby bamboo 竹の子 to fry and traepzed around the mountain framing the shrine. Up on the hill where the monks would go to meditate and look at the moon directly. It was filled with ashtrays and a massive Sapporo growler so that was interesting to think about.
Back in the studio... I am one of 3 sisters. The image of 3 women together has always held my imagination. The 3 muses, 3 graces, the beauty and power and the struggles that come with the number 3, especially 3 sisters, fascinates and inspires me.
