We all know that Lance Armstrong is a cancer survivor (despite his athletic career pursuits). What if we talked about mental illness like we talked about cancer?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “You just need to be cancer-free.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Snap out of it. At least you’re alive.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “There are treatments you can get. Get help. Stop being stubborn.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “You’re not really fatigued, it’s just all in your head.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⇣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ See what I mean? Whether you wake up and you’re fighting like hell or you’re ready to give up, remember: you are enough. Mindset is important with mental health, but what’s most important is that you go at your own pace. Don’t let anyone make you think that you need to snap out of it, get into a sleep routine, and push you around while you are figuring things out. You are human. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⇢ Happy thoughts do not automatically extinguish depressive thoughts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⇢ It is great that you are alive, but your feelings are valid. What’s a bigger blessing than your ability to feel. “At least” nothing. Feel FULLY even if that means it can be overwhelming. If you’re overwhelmed, ask for help that you’re comfortable with. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⇢ Don’t do treatments that don’t fully align with how you cope and learn. I’ve declined treatments, both psychiatric and medically because they didn’t align with what I wanted. I struggled MORE with group therapy and I refused radiation therapy. You are your own advocate. If you don’t want psychiatric medications, express that. I needed them at some point and was ashamed. Without antidepressants, I wouldn’t be alive.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⇢ You know your body better than anyone. If you’re emotionally drained, you can feel it. Do not let anyone shame you for providing your body what you need. If that means setting boundaries or making changes, find people who will genuinely support you while you create boundaries in your toxic relationships.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ *⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You are enough. You may not believe it, but you are.
