Species in Focus: Grass Snake Britain's largest snake, the Grass Snake, has long been linked with animal farming. These olive-green snakes, which have a distinctive yellow band around the neck, are egg-layers. Compost and manure heaps that were historically associated with livestock husbandry were a focus point for grass snakes, as they generated the heat required for incubating eggs. According to the Amphibian and Reptile Groups of the UK - ARG UK this close association led to the grass snake being regarded as a house god in some parts of Europe, the symbol of spring, wisdom and protecting livestock. Changes in practise and habitat loss are leading to a reduction in numbers of these snakes across the UK and one way that we could help these beautiful animals is by creating compost/ manure heaps in convenient areas i.e. grasslands or near wetlands. Barred Buttonquail..!!🐦 It was in 2016 that I first photographed this bird. Winter morning and I found this bird slowly walking on a small trail leading into the bushes. Out of all the shots that I took that day only two of them were comparatively good. A month later in Jan 2017 I again got my hands on this bird but even trying multiple shots all I could get was record shots owing to the low shutter speed due to the foggy morning. However the location was well noted. And only a few days later I met this beautiful bird again and this time the morning light favored me. I took plenty of shots of this bird which was carelessly foraging among a flock of Black francolins but the hard disk on which I stored the data crashed. Many imp. datas including this one were lost. It was finally this year that I found this bird on an unexpected location.This time the bird walked past me like teasing me and ran into the nearby bushes. On this early Spring day, I managed to find a close trail leading up to the Little Miami's edge where I could prop my DSLR on a tripod. Zoomed all the way at 600mm, this made quick work of the waterfowl from a distance. Like with all good wildlife portraits, I moved my focus point on the eyes. Since the pair was the same distance away on this log, I chose the right one with its eye open towards me. The left one kept its eye shut for most of the encounter as evidenced by the white dot underneath their eyelid. Canada Geese can always be particularly animated in their behavior, yet this moment proved to be a more mellow instance. This photo was edited with Skylum Software. This is the story of a heroic mare named “Rikki!” This beauty won my heart one day as I watched her put her life on the line in order to protect her family. “Rikki” is the beautiful mare in the first picture. I will never forget her total devotion to her family. She forever has my greatest respect and is now my absolute favorite mare in the world. Rikki spent hours putting herself in harms way in order to protect her family. I’ve never seen anything like this. While her band stallion was busy fighting off a challenge from another stallion, a group of three bachelor stallions went to war with Rikki, and each other, in an attempt to steal the family. Rikki took on the role of her family’s band stallion by always staying between the bachelors and her family. For hours I watched Rikki let her family travel on ahead while she stopped and battled three powerful stallions by herself, and WIN! She put a major beat down on these guys! Unfortunately, the very harsh reality of the Wild is the fact that Rikki also endured unbelievable brutality as the bachelors each mated with her while she was doing everything she could to protect her family. This was nearly impossible to witness without wanting to intervene. My heart and soul wanted to do something, anything, to prevent this from happening. However, our duty is to avoid altering the behavior of the Wild. This is their world, and we are uninvited guests. I can’t begin to describe the unwavering commitment this beauty has to her family. I have no doubt she would have sacrificed her own life to protect theirs. I wish I had a video of her heroic efforts to show those who question whether Wild Horses have strong family connections. Unfortunately, Rikki’s family was trapped and removed by the BLM recently. They have forever lost their freedom and will now be broken apart and each faces a very uncertain future. Human intervention is such an ugly twist in such a beautiful life. Majority of trees wanted to have their branches handled; the growing layer of snow seemed to be the main preventer. For me personally, the wind blowing thru the pines has this almost caring quality to it. It flows freely thru spaces, not limited to small and or large…when you least expect it, it slows…it wraps around you and it openly fills your personal zone…I like how it makes me feel and how it connect me to what is around me. Today, this wind was all that; but then some. With its invisible energy it carried flakes of moisture, white snowflakes that swirled, glided , fell and swooped from above…some melted when landed, some joined other flakes that have not melted and together purposed a growing mat of white, visually pleasingly, cold white, fluffy cover that many surfaces already were graced with…his winter fur among others. He stood stoically still as the winter frolic controlled what was around him. Patches of frozen snow were carelessly hanging at his chin and sides, visually he did not project life that was warm. If he was cold, he did not show it, maybe comfort-wise he was just right, or…I think that he was more than just right. His fur was thick and well tailored for his body. He was standing there quite content with what was happening around him…he was standing on a warm surface of a nearby thermal feature…he was wrapped, in a cozy and Nature designed comfort, but then to top this of, he also found a place to keep his feet warm… Hidden Yellowstone
